Let’s Start with the Chill Songs
(Just in case you need to ease into the day)
All of his songs makes me feel light and warm like “Tea” & “18” but, I think “Atlantic” by Emawk should be on this list.
Slightly less chill, but I feel in my element when I listen to it “All About Me” By Syd (“Keep it in the family that you came with”)
Mick Jenkins “Speed Racer” makes me think about my old friends. I also feel cool when I listen to it.
“Stars' ' by Kindred the Family Soul is being added because it was played in the roller rink when it was time to be chill and skate ‘round with no rush. Just let the old heads do they thing.
Jazz and Classical (And just instrumentals)
(Don’t even need words)
Had to start the list with some Charlie “Bird” Parker. I nominate “Bloomdido” by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to be added to your playlist. (I tried the sax once…nah you got it)
Roy by Ambrose Akinmusire (just listen to it and you’ll understand). (He followed me on insta!)
“Papillon” by A.L Youmans & Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as the man who pulled African-American folk music and concert music together)
Tokio Myers’ “Bloodstream” because it just does something to me. So pretty. Yes, that’s my professional opinion.
Honorable mention: Randall Goosby and Zhu Wang’s “Adoration”
Vibrate Higher
(You’re different huh)(has a magical feel to it)
Hmmm, I guess it makes sense to start with “Vibrate” by Outkast. Listen to the instruments then the “do do do do do doooo…” like what? Def was one of my faves as a kid
“Junie” by Solange is my go to. I feel good listening to it. Kinda like I can dance.
Of course a song that goes “Let it all work out” needs to be put on this list. “Indecision” by Sampha just hits the spot each time.
“Golden” by Jill Scott is g— yup.
“Closer” by Goapele had to be added because I play it when I need that boost (often).
“Live it Up” by John Legend & Miri Ben-Ari is a song my mom played when I was a kid. I remember sitting in the car and her playing his whole album and memorizing the lyrics.
Gospel Songs
(Because nothing’s higher than the most high, and it’s still Sunday)
Well of course I’m starting with some Kirk Franklin. We got “I Smile” “Brighter Day” “Lean on Me” & they’re all golden, but I think you want some “REVOLUTION” in your house right now.
“Mercy” by Eryn Allen Kane makes me cry whenever I put it on. “Have mercy on us all.”
Finally…we’re gonna wait to release this one
Because…I’m Black yall
(I dare you to click the button)
(To Blast when you’re feeling good ‘bout yourself. And if your non Black neighbors say somethin…)
I’m so glad “Almeda” by Solange is trending on tiktok. It’s nice to see everyone embracing themselves and showing love. Plus the song is just *chef’s kiss*
Joey Badass’ “Devastated” is a song I’ll play at least ten times in a row. It just makes me feel good knowing how far I’ve come, and how far I’ll go.
I mean the whole “The Lion King: The Gift'' (“Brown Skin Girl” makes me feel so happy) soundtrack can be added to this, but I’ll go with “My Power” by Tierra Whack, Beyonce, Moonchild Sanelly, Nija, DJ Lag, Yemi Alade & Busiswa. Love the lineup.
“To Be Young, Gifted and Black” sang by Nina Simone…I mean, look at the title and look at who’s singing
I know you've been waiting for it...
SLAP THE GROUND
“Optimistic” is the staple in a Black home because it makes you feel good, makes you move, the vocals…mmm something about a choir too,and of course it’s literally by Sounds of Blackness (not liking this song just means you don’t like
(I can’t dance, but I can slap that floor)
So, how many songs on this list do you know?
